iBeacon - Buy elsewhere and configure myself.

iBeacons that you buy from us come preconfigured and optimized for the automatic mileage tracking needs.

If you already have an iBeacon or if you managed to find the one for the better price, you can totally configure it yourself.

Before you just buy a new iBeacon from somewhere else, not from us, please be sure that it satisfies the following requirements:

  • Manufacture has an iPhone app for the product, so you can configure the following parameters:
    • iBeacon protocol on one of the transmission slots.
    • iBeacon protocol advertisement for every 100 milliseconds (Apple’s requirement).
    • iBeacon’s advertisement UUID supports hyphens (e.g. Teltonika’s iBeacons don’t support hyphens in UUID!)

We have the following brands tested and can confirm that their beacon devices are good/compatible iBeacons:

Minew, KKM, Miktrotik

All of these manufactures provide beacon products that satisfy the above requirements.

Once you have the unconfigured beacon, Apple’s requirements are clear:

Advertisement interval should be 100 milliseconds.

Use the iBeacon configuration app provided by the seller or manufacturer to connect to iBeacon device.

As an example let’s configure Minew E7 Plus beacon.

Scan for iBeacons and tap on the row with iBeacon to configure:

iBeacon configuration row

Minew has a default password to protect iBeacon configuration, it’s minew123. Enter when requested.

Most of times iBeacon service will have its own tab in the configuration:

iBeacon slot configuration

  1. Make sure that iBeacon is selected as a service.
  2. Select and copy the advertisement UUID, you’ll need to paste it in the app in the iBeacon configuration screen.
  3. Make sure that Advertisement interval is set to 100 milliseconds, it’s a requirement from Apple.

Return to the Speedometer 55 PRO or GPS Team 55 app and pair the app automatic tracking configuration with the UUID you copied to the pasteboard:

Follow the instructions and be sure to test that apps can see your iBeacon.

In rare cases, when adding new iBeacon, it is required to switch bluetooth off and then on again to let iPhone see the new Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) device.

If the app (either the manufacturer app or the Speedometer 55 or GPS Team 55) doesn’t see your iBeacon:

  1. Check if iBeacon is not switched off. E.g. Minew iBeacons come switched off, unscrew the iBeacon (in case of E7 Plus) and hold the small on/off switch until you see the blue led blinking.
  2. Switch bluetooth off and then on in the system settings.
  3. Try again.
