Taking card payments with SumUp

If you carry a SumUp card reader, you can charge the fare without leaving the app. The receipt screen has a SumUp button in the bottom bar, next to Square:

Tap it and the app hands the receipt total straight to SumUp. Everything after that — the reader, the card prompt, the tip screen, the customer’s emailed receipt — belongs to SumUp’s own checkout, and the app waits for the result.

The first tap asks you to sign in

SumUp is built into the app, so there is nothing to install and no settings screen to fill in. What you do need is a SumUp account and a working internet connection. The first time you tap the button, SumUp’s sign-in appears; after that the app remembers the account and goes straight to checkout.

If signing in cannot be completed you get a message saying so — it is almost always a missing internet connection rather than a wrong password.

Your SumUp currency has to match the phone’s

This is the one that catches drivers out. SumUp charges in your merchant currency, the one your SumUp account was opened in. The app charges in the currency of the device region. If the two differ, the app refuses the payment rather than charging the wrong amount, and tells you which two currencies it saw.

The fix is on the phone, not in the app: set the region so that the two agree. Currency for receipts and logs walks through it.

What gets charged

The amount sent to SumUp is the receipt total including tax — the same figure printed at the bottom of the receipt, after extras and after any adjustment you made to the total . A trip with nothing to pay cannot be sent: the app says so instead of opening a checkout for zero.

Tips added on the reader

If your customer adds a tip on the SumUp screen, the confirmation the app shows afterwards includes the tip amount. That tip belongs to the SumUp transaction: it is not added to the trip total in the app, and it does not appear on the app’s receipt or in Stats . If you want the tip on the app’s own receipt, add it before you take the payment — see adjusting the trip total .

Finding the payment again later

Every checkout is sent with a reference of the form TAXI55_XXXXXXXXXX_000123, ending in the receipt number of the trip. When you need to match a SumUp payout back to a trip weeks later, search SumUp for that receipt number — the reference is the thread between the two systems.

If you also print receipts

A Bluetooth receipt printer can only talk to one app at a time. While a SumUp checkout is running the app steps back from the printer, and reconnects once the checkout ends — whether it succeeded, failed or was cancelled. You do not have to do anything, but if you print immediately after a payment, give it a second. Printing covers printer setup.

Readers and currencies

The app uses SumUp’s current SDK, so whichever readers and currencies SumUp supports for your account work here too — there is no separate list kept inside the app. If a reader pairs with the SumUp app itself, it pairs here.

On Android

SumUp is iOS only for now. The Android receipt screen has the space reserved for it, but the button is not there yet.
