Ghost race: can I beat my last ride?

Public beta

Available in the public beta version.

Did I ride it faster than last time? Pick a track you have recorded, ride to its start and tap Start: the ride’s ghost sets off with you, exactly as you rode it then. All the way round you see whether you are ahead or behind, by how many seconds and how far, and at the end you get your time and the final gap. By bike, board or car.

Ghost race mode

Open MENU > Modes and choose Ghost race mode: the live map, the Ghost race panel under it, the speed, and the live Climb along the bottom.

The Ghost race panel is also a central area of its own: open the main panel’s menu, choose Pick what to show here, then Ghost race. A smaller Ghost race panel fits the micro area along the bottom.

Pick the ride to beat

Tap Ghost race at the top of the panel (or Pick a ghost in it) to open its menu, then Ghost: the track you raced last, the tracks pinned on the map, or Choose a track… for any track you have recorded. The app offers to show the track on the map: its line is drawn in cyan, and the ghost rides on it.

The Ghost race menu over the map: Ghost (Berkeley sprint), Start the race, At the finish (Stop the track or Keep recording), Clock (Total time or Moving time), Sounds, and the four values

The same menu holds what the race shows and how it ends:

  • At the finish: Stop the track (the track that the race started stops at the finish) or Keep recording.
  • Clock: Total time (every second from GO, stops too) or Moving time (stops are left out).
  • Sounds: the countdown’s ticks and GO. The haptics stay either way.
  • First value to Fourth value: the four cards beside the gap: Ahead / behind, Average speed, Finish, Trend, Ghost's speed here, Race time or Progress.

Ride to the start

A race starts at the start of the track you are racing, nowhere else. Away from it, the panel says TO THE START and how far it is, and the ghost waits there on the map. Close to the start, the panel shows how far the start line is ahead of you or behind you.

Away from the track’s start: TO THE START 0.71 mi, “Ride to the track’s start: Start is offered there. The ghost waits there on the map.”, the track in cyan on the map

Start: 3 · 2 · 1 · GO

At the start the panel says START. Tap it: 3 · 2 · 1 · GO, with a haptic and a tick each second (tap again to cancel). At GO a new track starts recording, so every race has a track of its own. If a track was recording, it is finished first and the new one starts.

At the start of the Berkeley sprint: START in the Ghost race panel, “3 · 2 · 1 · GO: the race from the track’s start, and a new track from GO.”, VS OCT 11 · BERKELEY SPRINT

During the race

A minute into the race: the ghost’s ring behind the rider on the map with −0:04 under it; GAP −0:04 in green, 0.28 of 0.86 mi, AHEAD 97 ft (the ghost behind), AVG 16.5 mph (ghost 15.4), FINISH ~3:16, TREND ▲ 18 s/mi gaining; the race strip with the ghost and the rider

  • GAP is the time between you and the ghost at the place you are now: green with a minus when you are ahead, red with a plus when you are behind, white when level. Under it, how far round you are.
  • The ghost is the dashed ring on the map, with the same gap under it. The race strip under the cards shows you and the ghost along the whole track.
  • The cards: AHEAD / BEHIND (how far apart you are), AVG (your average speed and the ghost’s on the same road), FINISH (your expected finish time and what is left), TREND (whether you are gaining or losing, in seconds per mile or kilometre).
  • The live Climb panel races the same ghost: “vs ghost −0:04” on each climb.

Off the track, the race goes on: the panel says “Off the track: the race goes on”, and it carries on when you are back. Ridden the wrong way round a loop, the ghost does not ride backwards: “Wrong way: the ghost rides the track as recorded”.

How it ends

The race ends by itself at the end of the track: the RESULT. With At the finish: Stop the track, the track stops too. Otherwise only you end it; leaving the track or standing idle never ends it:

  • STOP TRACK: the race stops with it (STOPPED, with how far you got and the gap).
  • Stop the race (in the menu): ends the race and stops the track.
  • Leave the race (in the menu): ends the race; the track keeps recording.

The result

The finish: RESULT 3:03 with Analyze ›, the gap −0:17 in green, NEW RACE; AHEAD 379 ft, AVG 17.0 mph (ghost 15.6), FINISH 3:03, TREND ▲ 21 gaining; on the Climb panel: 3:03 · −0:17 against this ride

At the finish the panel shows RESULT with your time, and the final gap under it: −0:17 means you beat the ghost by 17 seconds. The cards keep their last values until you start the next race.

  • Analyze › opens the race’s track: where you won or lost it .
  • NEW RACE: ready for the next race (ride to the start and tap Start).
  • With Ghost set to Off, the panel keeps LAST RACE and its gap, and Race again races the same ghost.

The race is kept with the new track: its gap, its ghost and its result, in the track’s stats and charts, and in its exports.
