Complete export of tracks/trips and points for backup or import to another device/app.

Moving to a new iPhone

Restore from backup or use Apple’s transfer mechanism

The easiest path is to restore your new iPhone from the old iPhone’s backup or use the transfer mechanism that Apple provides:

Quick Start (recommended): https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210216

Backup and restore: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204184

App data is automatically included in your iPhone backup, so all your trips, tracks, and waypoints will transfer seamlessly.

No backup or want to start fresh?

If you want to start with a clean state on your new iPhone but still transfer specific data, use the manual export/import method below.

Exporting and importing data

Manual export serves as a great way to:

  • Keep a backup of your data in an interoperable format
  • Transfer specific trips and waypoints between devices
  • Import data to other geo apps on your PC or Mac (e.g., Google Earth)
  • Share data with colleagues or friends

Tracks and trips

Export:

MENU > Trips > Edit > Tap on a trip row > In the trip editor screen tap on the bottom-left action button > Save file:

A. Trip archive - The best option for importing back into the app on another iPhone. Keeps 100% of track details.

B. Google Earth KMZ - An interoperable option that supports import back into the app, but also into Google Earth and other mapping applications.

Go trip by trip to export each one.

Import:

On the new iPhone, from the Files app, use “Open In” function to open the trip archive (.trk file) or KMZ file in Compass 55.

Waypoints

Export:

MENU > Waypoint collections > Tap on the More button > Select > Select collections to export > Bottom-left action button > Export as KMZ > Save to Files.

Now you have an archive that you can open in Google Earth app on PC/Mac and import 1:1 into the app on another iPhone.

Note: If there are too many photos in the exported waypoints, the iPhone might fail to export all collections at once. Please export them collection by collection in that case.

Import:

On the new iPhone, from the Files app, use “Open In” function to open the KMZ file in Compass 55. Or use MENU > Tracks or MENU > Waypoints - then the More button > Import to import tracks/trips or waypoint files.
